Frequently Asked Questions

A Few Questions/Answers

Q: Why should I shop at the Farmers Market?
A: There are many good reasons to shop at farmers market! You can purchase fresh produce directly from the farm, eliminating the middleman or the long transportation routes between the farm and the consumer. Farmers often offer quality produce at cheaper prices because the farmers can set their own prices and don't have to go through other people or grocery stores. You may be able to find specialty items that you wouldn't find at a regular grocery store, such as persimmons, lemon cucumbers, or Asian pears!

Q: Where do I park when I visit the Market?
A: In the parking lot at the Ross County Service Center. 475 Western Avenue, Chillicothe, Ohio.

Q: Why should I eat fruits and vegetables in season?
A: Fruits and vegetables should be eaten in season because the vitamin content is best at that time. They are also usually the tastiest and freshest when they are in season.

Q: How do I know if my produce is ripe?
A: There are different ways to check for ripeness depending on what kind of produce you are considering. Ask the farmer and he/she should be able to tell you the best way.

Come shop, sample, and stroll. It will make your day!

A Few Tips

  • Use the market as a place to plan your meal. Go to the market, and get inspired. Learn to shop and eat "seasonally."
  • Talk to the producer. Get valuable information on even the most common fruits and vegetables.
  • Buy a new item every once in a while. Ask the person next to you or the producer to give you some ideas on how to use it.
  • Get the kids involved. Give them a few dollars and let them buy whatever produce they want and will eat.
  • Take your favorite basket or cloth bag. It's sustainable and environmentally friendly.
  • Recycle your plastic bags after each market trip.
  • Use your senses to find the best items. Smell, touch (gently) and taste.
  • Bring a friend to the market. Turn someone else on to the rich satisfaction that can be found through the food and community at the Farmers Market.
